How To: Get the CrySDK working on Linux/MacOSX - a guide.

Postby chiefwhosm » 28.04.2012, 12:39

First a couple of screenshots on Ubuntu 12.04 x64, CrossOver 11, 32bit Editor and Launcher v3.4.0:
cx_editor.jpg
cx_launcher.jpg

1) Install wine (yes I think wines ubuntu ppa installs files that makes cryengine happier - weird, try without wine if you want - or just try wine by itself).

2)Create a new bottle, call it what you want.

3) Put the CryEngines files from the zip into a new folder within the bottle (I chose drive_c to avoid spaces in names).

4) In the bottle, install the Visual Studio C++ 2008 Redistributrable.

5) In the config, add the CryDevLogin.exe as a new application.

6) Highlight the new application, go to Libraries and set an override for mfc90.dll to native.

7) Launch the editor or launcher, login as usual.

A couple of points:

1) The Editor is very slow to launch (so much so you won't think anything is happening after double clicking the exe icon).
2) It's normal to get a complaint about an unsupported video vendor
3) Changing/Disabling the skin with a map loaded crashed the editor for me, but worked fine with just the editor loaded and no map.
4) The Launchers main menu UI is a bit garbled, but is useable.
5) The title mentions MacOSX, CrossOver Mac and Wine installers exsist, I see no reason why the above shouldn't work for any mac fans out there, but no guarantees of course.
6) Crossover is a paid product, currently though you can get it incredibly cheap (£3.70 instead of £32) using trialpay and the right offer if you feel like it.

Chief :)

How does the performance compare with Windows?

Performance wise seems the same, though I dont think my SLI is enabled currently, so 31.5fps as you see in the picture (though sometimes it said 700:p) but it seemed smooth enough while flying through the forest level in the editor.

The point in my case was I was trying out the latest ubuntu and decided to see if I could get it working, others may have the point that they'd prefer to use their preferred OS whatever it may be.

Mysteriously enough, having just been able to try it on osX, the launcher works perfectly, while the editor viewports are just white blank areas - not sure why the editors viewports would render any different from the game.

Hello,

Could anyone update this guide? Im not able to run CE3 on Mac using WineSkin.

For example i think there isnt a "CryDevLogin.exe" file anymore in current version of CE3?

Also i tried installing Visual Studio C++ 2008 Redistributrable, DirectX and other software but the editor is always crashing 2-3 seconds after i run it.

Would be awesome if someone could port it using WineSkin.

Same problem. OSX 10.8.4 with CrossOver trial and CE3 crashes after 1 sec.

/chiefwhosm, how you managed to run CryEngine on MacOS? Can you post more details on which version Wine you used, etc. I am actually getting stuck with creating new bottle, as various programs (Wine, CrossOver, WineBottler) are doing it in different way and I am not sure if at this step I am correct.

1. Can you post some comments how exactly you did this step?
Steps 4 - 6 got also confusing.

2. For example do I need to install VS C++ 2008 on the same bottle as cryengine files are placed?
3. Where in 3.4.0 pack CryDevLogin.exe is located?
4. Don't understand step (6). Can you post a bit more detail how you doing that?

Well, It would be better if there was the motor directly to run on Linux, but I think the mess is to configure the code for any IDE other than Visual Studio and run on Linux.
Please, don`t Kill me. I speak English so so. Some times i used google translator XD.

If somebody did it, then that means that it is possible. If successor would post more details (like versions of linux, Mac, Wine, as well as more detailed steps) I guess it would be much easier.

Did anyone, who are still reading this forum had any success with this guide at all?
