Crytek on Android?

Postby James Coote » 24.01.2013, 11:37

Hi,

I'm planning to take part in the Global Game Jam this weekend, and I noticed that CryEngine3 is one of the jam sponsors. I had heard that CryEngine3 might support android, and since I'm bringing my OUYA along to the jam (it runs android), I was thinking it might be a cool project to try and get CryEngine3 working on it. However, I've struggled to find any information on if this is possible.

I'm a total newbie with CryEngine3 so apologies if this question has already been asked before / it is obvious for anyone who has used CryEngine3

Thanks
James

Crytek's Fibble (http://www.fibble.com) runs on a light version of the CryEngine for IOS. This version of the engine is however not available for licensing / for developers. Don't know Crytek's plan for the future though.

Full blown CE3 on low spec would crush the best android devices on the market :'( You'd need to install fans in your tablet/phone/whatever lol!

No doubt they are capable of building for arm arch and wrapping up opengl es into a renderer, but if you check out the game Lavizh is talking about, while really cool, is not quite CE3.

Would love to get my hands on a CE3 mobile implementation though :D I like the spirit of the idea, bigtime!

Makes sense. You're never going to get the bleeding edge graphics on a tablet or micro-console, but the latest chipsets for mobile seem like they are only a few years behind PC performance wise.

While Fibble looks cool, it is still a kids game with cartoony style, which maybe indicates the way crytek perceive mobile gaming.

I did a bit more digging and I noted crytek have a mobile studio in Kiev (though apparently no games released out of there yet), and I also came across something called GFace, which seems to have some sort of crytek support. I suppose mobile must feature at least somewhere in crytek's overall strategy, so might be something for the future maybe

Thanks again for the replies!

I agree the latest generation of devices has surprised me. I have never used this OUYA device you mentioned (looks really cool), but I have a couple nexus phones and tablets kicking around. I worked on part of the backport of android to armv4 on the openmoko freerunner. I don't think we were the first ever device to run android, but maybe the 2nd (without proper opengl es driver support it sucked anyway haha). I am a huge supporter of the technology and would love to see an SDK from Crytek for it.

I think that Fibble game is just bright and cartoony because for various reasons those are the types of games having the most success in the market. Think of Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja and so on hehe. I am sure Crytek is working on something to blow our minds in that area :)

Have fun at the Jam!

AFAIK It was mentioned that this is a completely separate engine, whilst being referred to as "CryENGINE".

We don't, as evident by our recent demo at Apple's WWDC in June :) And Kiev works on Warface, while Budapest is our mobile-focused studio (where said demo came from).
