CRYENGINE "Engine-as-a-Service" (EaaS) program – FAQ


What is the Engine-as-a-Service program?

Here at Crytek, we want to give people the opportunity to work with and enjoy our cutting-edge CRYENGINE technology without paying additional license fees or royalties.  With our Engine-as-a-Service (EaaS) program, everyone can get access to the most up to date version of our CRYENGINE by paying a 9.90 EUR/USD subscription fee per month.  We want to be able to share our technology with the fast-growing and ever-changing business environment of today’s gaming industry, and enable everyone to achieve their visions of creating amazing games and interactive content.


Who is it for?

Our EaaS program is aimed at anyone who wants to play and develop video games with CRYENGINE. We’d like to give every developer state-of-the-art tools that live within the same eco-system that they can choose to publish their games. By ruling out royalties we are aiming to make CRYENGINE the best choice for everyone, and hope its arrival on Steam will empower developers of all sizes to achieve their creative visions.


What do I need to do to become part of the EaaS program?

Becoming part of our EaaS program is easy! Everyone with access to a Steam account can click here, which will redirect you to the CRYENGINE page of the Steam Store. This is where you can set up your CRYENGINE subscription.

We strongly reccomend that you take the time to read our End-User License Agreement “EULA” before you purchase.


What will I get with my monthly subscription?

Getting in with our EaaS program has a number of benefits: first of all, you will always have access to the latest build of our CRYENGINE, and be the first to hear about any upcoming updates. You have instant access to all graphic features and tools, including the powerful renderer behind our Xbox One title Ryse: Son of Rome, C++ and Lua API interfaces along with a full game implementation written in C++, and demo levels and assets for different types of games.

You will also be granted access to all our Engine and Tools documentation, such as programming API references and multiple tutorials by our talented CRYENGINE professionals, as well as access to our CRYENGINE community, full of equally dedicated individuals to help you with any question or issue that might surface.


What are the system requirements?

o    Operating System: Windows Vista SP1, Windows 7, Windows 8. (64bit only)

o    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz, AMD Athlon 64 X2 2GHz or better (multi-core processor is strongly recommended).

o    Memory: 4 GB RAM (8 GB recommended).

o    Video Card: NVIDIA series 400, Radeon HD 6000 Series or better (DirectX 11 minimum).

End Users who only use the game launcher without Sandbox have lower system requirements.

o    Operating System: Windows Vista SP1, Windows 7, Windows 8.

o    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz, AMD Athlon 64 X2 2GHz or better (multi-core processor is strongly recommended)

o    Memory: 2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended).

o    Video Card: NVIDIA series 400, Radeon HD 6000 Series or better (DirectX 11 minimum).


What platforms can I get with the subscription?

At the moment we fully support PC Windows. During GDC 2014, we announced our development of CRYENGINE on Linux. We will announce additional platforms as they become available.


What about PS4, Xbox One, Wii U?

How often will the engine be updated?

We work with a monthly update plan to continuously enhance the CRYENGINE and incorporate the latest bug fixes and new features. Hot fixes and additional content will also be shared by Crytek as needed.


Will any CRYENGINE updates have an effect on my project?

In order to get the most out of your project, we encourage all of our subscribers to use the latest version of CRYENGINE, especially in the early stages of development. This means your project will benefit from the latest advances in our technology, with access to the most optimized features and assets.

If your project is already well underway or close to being finished, we encourage you to stick to your current development plan and ship with whichever version of CRYENGINE works best for you.


What if I want to have more access to the source code other than the current 9.90/month subscription?

We offer a full source code license model to professional development studios. Please register here to leave us your contact information and; we will get back in touch as soon as possible in your preferred language and local business hours.


Can I cancel my subscription at anytime?

Yes, you can alter (cancel or resume) your subscription at any time.  All you have to do is log in to your account, check your settings, and choose unsubscribe. You will receive an email with all the information regarding your changed settings and your subscription will run out automatically.

If at any time after cancelling your subscription you wish to resume again, simply log in to your account and resume the subscription.


What will happen to my project if I cancel my subscription?

Stopping the subscription means that CRYENGINE and its Tools are no longer available in your account...


How can I release my project with CRYENGINE?

You can release or ship your finished project when you are part of the EaaS program via subscription. No approval is required from Crytek as long the terms of the EULA are respected. We offer a set of guidelines in our documentation to help prepare your game for a release.


Do you support Kickstarter projects?

With the new subscription model, you are able to release your project in any way you want, including Kickstarter. The only prerequisite is that you use the latest version of our CRYENGINE (version 3.6 and up).


What happens to the existing CRYENGINE Free SDK?

The CRYENGINE Free SDK will continue to exist; however, it will no longer receive further updates.


I’ve signed a Free SDK commercialization agreement with Crytek. What does this mean for me?

Your agreement is still valid: you can continue with your project and share 20% of the royalties with us when your project releases.

If you want to upgrade your contract to the monthly subscription model, please contact us and we will help you to terminate your old agreement. Once it’s terminated, we will set you up with a new subscription model. Do note that only projects powered with CRYENGINE v3.6+ will be able to convert to the subscription model! If your project is powered by an earlier version of our engine, please contact us to sign the commercialization agreement (with 20% royalty share).


I’m a full source CRYENGINE licensee. What does this mean for me?

As a full source licensee, you get full source code access of our CRYENGINE technology, full support, and dedicated trainings. You also have direct communication access to our engine development and support team.
