[Download] The Cloud VR

Postby Synce » 05.09.2015, 23:41

The Cloud VR is a quick experiment of virtual reality in CRYENGINE.

While I haven't seen a lot of VR demos with Cryengine, here is one. Nothing special to do here, it is just an experiment about how optimize and setup a demo with VR.
My inspiration for this project is the latest work of Charles Pétillon at the London's Covent Garden.
The 3D is really basic, the UVs aren't even right, but anyway I hope you'll like it.

This version 3.8.3 of the engine support the driver 0.6.0.0 Beta.

Enjoy

Technical notes:
-Globally it's easy to setup, Crytek did a good job.
-The SSDO looks horrible in VR, even at full res, we need SSAO back, it was more smooth and cheaper.
-What is the best antialiasing mode in VR?
-Is it possible to go further than 75fps per eye?

Hi Synce,

regarding your questions:

1) The best antialiasing mode we support in VR is 3 (i.e. SMAA 2TX)
r_AntialiasingMode 3

2) Is it possible to go further than 75fps per eye?
Quick answer: Not in DK2.
The Oculus runtime does a sync that matches the refresh rate of their devices.
This means 75 FPS for DK2 and 90 FPS for Crescent Bay.

Cheers
Dario

Thanks Dario, indeed the DK2 support 75fps, I had the Crescent Bay's specs in mind.

Just to make it clear, we do not limit the FPS to 75 or 90, so depending on your PC's specs and your game's logic and content you should be able to render at Crescent Bay's native 90 FPS with CRYENGINE without any issues.

Synce, this is amazing work! I am new to VR so please answer to this questions:

1- First of all, how did you get to shrink the file size to 450mb!!! can you please tell me which are ALL the files I can safely eliminate form the Cryengine folder? Can't believe you have such a small running file.....

2- Although I have simple scene, with the Oculus it is lagging as hell, yours runs so smooth! Did you do any sort of optimization for the VR?

3- What is the correct screen resolution I should set in graphics setting for the Oculus, or just leave the default 800x600px?

Thanks in advance and congrats for your work!!!

Just remove the assets related to Woodlands, trees, bushes, textures etc... its pretty straight forward. The CRYENGINE directory structure is explained here http://docs.cryengine.com/display/SDKDO ... +Structure

Hi eralderald!
Thank you!
1. You can look into the folders, I deleted all the .pak but gamedata and script. Look into the project Sponza too, I did the same.
2. Did you check the documentation? Lot of things are to do to optimize a complexe scene, you can check the doc here : http://docs.cryengine.com/display/SDKDO ... Guidelines and use profilers to see what's taking some ms. Like profile 1. In my scene there is almost nothing so...
3. Check the doc here http://docs.cryengine.com/display/SDKDO ... culus+Rift and make sure to use their user.cfg and vr.cfg !

Yes I did...I guess at this point is a scene complexity problem. Mine is simple, but is bigger than yours. Maybe this is it. Thanks!

Hmm... Damn VR is so expensive in graphics power! I have a GTX980 and still it doesn't go further then 30-35fps in my scene. Lags a lot if you dont reach the 70fps target. Orderd a Titan X (work pays for it fortunately) hopping that will run smoother, otherwise I guess we are too early for VR with today top of the line GPUs.

Another question please, how did you get to jump directly to your scene when launching the game? I mean without going to Cryengine menu, single player, select level....
What are the Flowgraph nodes or Cvars to do that? That would be really helpful to me...

Thank you,
Erald.

I can propose you to send me your scene if you can, I'll take a look and give you some tricks to optimize it.
To directly launch the level, create a .txt at root, write inside "map nameofyourmap" and name it autoexec.cfg. It will load your level at startup.

Thanks a lot! Appreciate your help! I will upload it on dropbox tonight and send you the link.I'll send you a private message since it is a work project and it's confidential...
It would be great if there is something to do to optimize it, 30fps on a GTX 980 is very low... : (

Erald
