CRYENGINE Community Spotlight – Core Elements

Core Elements is a sci-fi game set in a world ravaged by pollution and global warming. Sea levels have risen and rendered much of the US, Asia and the Middle East uninhabitable. The Global Defence Group is fixing the problem by getting rid of the cause. Who? The people. But not their own… Set in Chernobyl and Scandinavia, the stakes are high and the mystery runs deep in this upcoming indie shooter.

We spoke to Digital Days Entertainment to find out more about the game, development, and the forthcoming demo…

We heard you are releasing a demo soon. What can players expect in this slice of gameplay?

Thanks! You will get to play two major missions in Pripyat, the deserted former city where the Chernobyl disaster took place. These two missions revolve around taking the city back from the Global Defence Group. There will also be different side missions and activities that include rescuing resistance members and taking control of smaller areas. You’ll also be introduced to the Elements system that lets you take the advantage over your enemies.

Can you tell us a bit more about the Elements system?

The Core Elements system gives you supercharged abilities. They make you feel like you have become a “super soldier” for a short time, but you need to find the Core Elements of Earth to recharge these abilities. It’s just cool seeing two enemies being blown away while you are gunning down more at the same time, or you’re running faster and jumping even higher than normal, and taking down enemies mid air.

Why did you choose CRYENGINE to develop your game?

We chose CRYENGINE because of two reasons. The first reason being that the engine is really powerful for creating first-person shooters and cinematic experiences, and the second is the great help provided by the amazing team over at Crytek. Thank you guys!

How long have you been working with CRYENGINE?

We have been using CRYENGINE for just over two years now and been working on Core Elements for almost the entire time. The two of us working on the game have been friends for a long time and we always shared a passion for computers and games.

Which CRYENGINE features have made the difference for your development?

The two major features that made development much easier is Flow Graph and the new Substance Integration. Flow Graph made smaller things like area events much easier and faster to create and finish. The Substance Integration has made our process using Substance software way faster and much better.

What role has the CRYENGINE community played during development so far?

When a little thing hasn’t worked and we just couldn’t find a solution, we searched the community forums. Once or twice we even asked the community for help directly. We’d like to thank the community for being great!

What are the next steps for the game after the demo milestone?

Our Pripyat setting is almost completed but the story is still in the midst of development. But we believe that the current form will stay for the full release. We are planning to release our game this year.

Sweet. Any advice for other indie developers working on their projects?

We’re not the most experienced in this area we can’t really give any great advice! But we can tell you that starting big after making some simple 2D games is hard. As you can see on our social media, we want to create a unique experience that is more ambitious than anything we have done before. It has been tough and there have been times when we almost gave up. But if you keep pushing through it and shape the experience around what's possible, you can do it.

Cheers!
