No experience? No problem. Make a game from scratch with our new course, Flappy Boid!

Are you completely new to game development? Or do you want to brush up on best practice with CRYENGINE? Today, we’re talking about our new beginner’s course, Flappy Boid, which you can access for free right now.

Flappy Boid is a full “crash course” for CRYENGINE in which you’ll learn core game development principles as you build a working game complete with modeling, texturing, animation, audio, particle effects, a dynamic real-world environment, score-keeping and a user interface. By the end, you’ll be able to export a standalone build that you can put on Steam or distribute as you like.

The game uses some of our free GameSDK assets as well as some new custom assets that we've developed specifically for the course, all of which are available for free, alongside the Flappy Boid project.

The first phase of the release is a PDF course book, about 100 pages long, that anyone can use to teach themselves development using CRYENGINE 5.5. You need no prior experience. Game mechanics are achieved through our time-tested and friendly Flow Graph visual scripting language.

We spoke to Brian Dilg, Learning Manager, about the course and plans for the future;

“This is the first of a series of courses that we plan to release in the coming months as part of a larger educational initiative with a single, simple goal: make it easy for anyone to learn and use CRYENGINE V. Collectively, the finished series of courses will cover all of the major principles and tools of CRYENGINE V while also teaching game development best practices.

“While we’ve deliberately limited the scope of this course to core principles, rather than issuing a single overwhelming encyclopaedia, anyone who completes the course will be empowered to start building their own games.

“We’ve also been using this course book to teach CRYENGINE V classes around Germany since January, so it was designed by teachers for teachers to use in live classes. We believe strongly in classroom education. At the same time, we recognize that this is not an option for everyone, nor does it suit all learning styles, so in addition to making the course book self-explanatory for individual self-study, we will also publish it as a series of video tutorials in the near future for those who prefer that learning format. Hi, it is great, right now I finished chapter 6 of it, I'm programmer but completely new to game development I hope there will be more videos and nice learning path for my kind ("newbies") because I think it is a little bit confusing for what after flappy boid should be learned?!

Even though this uses some stuff from GameSDK for obvious reasons, I actually learned a few new things! Which is great! Looking forward to better C# support in the future releases. Keep up the new learning resources!

I think only schematyc has the least ambiguity, I do not see Even the C-Sharp component does not exist in the CryEngine 5.5, I see Lua Component at Lumberyard and I see Javascript Component and C-Sharp Component at Unity , I think If C-Sharp Component does not exist at CryEngine 5.6 or 5.7, it will be hard to develop projects with C-Sharp ,Also Schematyc should also be equipped with a "circular red stream" to the node line connection, such as the blueprints for see which nodes are running in Schematyc.

As Cry-Nic said before :
"Flowgraph isn't going to be deprecated in the foreseeable future. We have no plans for that as it is quite powerful as a visual scripting language. Yes, Schematyc is a new take on visual scripting, especially with the new Entity Component System also shaping up, but it's still in beta and will eventually see another iteration before it's production ready. So far, we're supporting Flowgraph as production-ready visual scripting solution."
